In excess of 250 people have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of ongoing federal immigration control operations, according to official sources.

Growing Federal Actions

Charlotte constitutes the latest American city to experience heightened federal involvement, following comparable operations in larger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles earlier this year. Federal authorities have claimed that those arrested include persons with illegal activities and organized crime affiliates.

Regional Objections

However, elected officials and residents have vocally opposed the apprehensions, which federal officials have called "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's chief executive has asserted that individuals are being targeted based on their skin color.

"We've seen concealed, heavily armed agents in military-style uniforms driving unmarked vehicles, targeting American citizens based on their appearance, practicing racial profiling and detaining arbitrary people in parking areas," commented the top official. "This methodology is not improving our security."

Official Viewpoint

In a freshly published announcement, a federal spokesperson stated that the operation has resulted in the arrest of "including the most threatening criminal undocumented individuals", comprising street gang participants.

Additional persons detained had been sentenced for diverse crimes, such as assault on law enforcement personnel, operating vehicles under influence, theft and manipulating government papers, according to the department.

Municipal Response

The city's municipal leader, similarly a liberal politician, encouraged federal authorities to operate with "respect" for the city's values. She furthermore praised those who participated in substantial groups on Saturday to oppose the federal government's operations in the city.

Persisting Actions

Federal authorities have not revealed how long the enforcement actions will persist. Chicago's crackdown started in September and continues active. Like other cities experiencing immigration enforcement, various immigrants in Charlotte are remaining indoors due to fear about federal officers in the community, according to regional news.

The top official indicated he's monitoring reports that the operation will move to Raleigh, a different North Carolina city, next.

"Yet again, I urge federal agents to concentrate on aggressive lawbreakers, not community members strolling along the road, attending places of worship, or installing Christmas decorations," he wrote.
