Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track immediately ahead of his car

The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when track officials were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the situation

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"

"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
