Adolescent Found Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Taking Ashes
A teenage youth was discovered deceased only a few days after being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Flintshire residence on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The investigation heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her child. The message added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said property was never taken in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that one 19-year-old urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from educational personnel at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called the family's family landline and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they did not receive that message.
Official Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the hearing he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or added to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his intent."
